History of the Maserati Car Company in Italy (Maserati Chronology
or Timeline)
1914 - Founded on the 1st of December, 1914 by the 6 Maserati
brothers Bindo, Alfieri, Carlo, Mario, Ettore, and Ernesto Maserati.
Founded in Bologna, Italy. Originally building Grand Prix cars
for the Diatto company.
1926 - Alfieri Maserati wins the 1926 Targa Florio car race with
one of the first Maserati cars.
1932 - Alfieri Maserati dies.
1937 - The 3 brothers to still own shares in the company Bindo,
Ernesto and Ettore Maserati sold out to the Adolfo Orsi family
company. They continued to work on the engineering team at Maserati
for the next 10 years.
1940 - Orsi moves the Maserati headquarters from Bologna to Modena,
Italy where it remains today.
1957 - Famous Argintinian racing car driver Juan-Manuel Fangio
won the Formula one world championship in a Maserati 250F.
1968 - Maserati was bought by the French car maker Citroën.
1975 - The Benelli motorcycle company acquired Maserati after
struggling financially for several years. Alessandro de Tomaso
took charge of the company.
1993 - Fiat bought Maserati and invested heavily in the company.
1997 - The Fiat controlled Ferrari bought a 50% share in Maserati.
1999 - Ferrari takes full control of the Maserati company.
2005 - Fiat took control of Maserati.
2007 - The Maserati brand made a profit for the first time in
17 years for the Fiat company.
